Both NICEIC and NAPIT are government-approved competent person schemes for electricians in England and Wales. There is no meaningful difference in the quality of work — both require their members to meet the same technical standards and undergo regular assessment. The choice between them is a business decision for the electrician, not a quality indicator for the customer. Either registration confirms the electrician is competent and can self-certify their work.

An RCD (Residual Current Device) protects against earth leakage, which is what can kill you if you touch a live wire. Modern consumer units use RCBOs, which combine both functions into a single device per circuit, giving you the best protection. If your consumer unit still has rewirable fuses, it is overdue for an upgrade.

Stop using the socket immediately and switch off the circuit at the consumer unit. Sparking when plugging in can sometimes be normal (a brief blue flash), but persistent sparking, blackening around the socket, or a crackling sound indicates a serious wiring fault. Occasional flickering is usually caused by a loose bulb or a poor connection at the light fitting. Persistent flickering across multiple lights can indicate a loose neutral connection at the consumer unit, a faulty main switch, or an issue with the incoming supply.
